A night telephonist working at a telephone switchboard. 17 Aug 1940. St Bartholomews Hospital, London. Reference: MED01/01/0862. At the outbreak of the Second World War, most of the nursing staff and patients at St Bartholomew’s Hospital were evacuated from central London to Hill End Hospital in St Albans. Some wards remained open, however, primarily those receiving emergency cases and casualties. The night telephonist would remain at their post all night, providing news of accidents or emergencies to casualty stations, doctors and staff.
